Plan your server

System
Choose Ubuntu 24.04 amd64 for the documented setup.
Starting resources
This installation template requires at least 4 GB RAM. Start with 2 vCPU and 50 GB storage, then add capacity for your workload. These are template requirements and suggestions, not the upstream software minimum.
SSH access
Read the installation README through SSH and follow its tunnel instructions. Create your own owner account in browser onboarding.
Public access
Begin through the documented SSH tunnel to localhost on port 8123. Configure HTTPS and appropriate proxy settings before public access.

Start your installation

  1. Select Home Assistant, Latest and Ubuntu 24.04, then choose a plan with at least 4 GB RAM.
  2. Wait for first-boot installation to finish. Check its status through SSH using the README.
  3. Read the installation README through SSH and follow its tunnel instructions. Create your own owner account in browser onboarding.
  4. Complete initial setup, then configure the public domain and backups as needed.

Questions about your VPS

  • This is Home Assistant Container with Core. Supervisor and its app store are not included. Deploy and maintain any companion services separately.
  • A cloud VPS has no native access to your home's USB Zigbee or Bluetooth adapters or automatic LAN discovery. Devices need reachable networking, a VPN or supported integrations. A home internet outage can break that connection.
  • Follow the README's SSH instructions and create your owner account. The persistent configuration directory retains settings and history during normal restarts. Back it up before changes and manual upgrades.
