Plan your server
- System
- Choose Ubuntu 24.04 amd64 for the documented setup.
- Starting resources
- This installation template requires at least 4 GB RAM. Start with 2 vCPU and 50 GB storage, then add capacity for your workload. These are template requirements and suggestions, not the upstream software minimum.
- SSH access
- Read the installation README and its referenced root-only credential file through SSH. Keep credentials private.
- Public access
- An SSH tunnel to localhost provides a valid browser secure context. A production public endpoint requires trusted HTTPS and the correct configured domain.
Start your installation
- Select Vaultwarden, Latest and Ubuntu 24.04, then choose a plan with at least 4 GB RAM.
- Wait for first-boot installation to finish. Check its status through SSH using the README.
- Follow the README's SSH instructions and read referenced root-only credentials.
- Complete initial setup, then configure the public domain and backups as needed.
Questions about your VPS
- Public signup is disabled. Read the generated admin token from the protected root-only credential file, open administration through the documented access method, and invite your user. Choose your own vault master password.
- Use localhost through the README's SSH tunnel for initial access. The browser treats localhost as a secure context. For a public production URL, configure trusted HTTPS before using the web vault.
- Persistent storage preserves installed vault data across normal restarts. It is not a backup. Back up the data directory and keys separately, and follow the README for manual upgrades.
