Tools for your own server

One PostgreSQL database with the vector extension enabled.

Vectors alongside SQL

Store embeddings with application records and combine similarity queries with SQL filters.

HNSW and IVFFlat

Add approximate indexes when needed. Measure recall, memory and query behavior for your actual data.

Private database access

Connect with PostgreSQL clients through SSH using a generated application account with limited privileges.

Choose a starting configuration

OS
Ubuntu 24.04, amd64.
Resources
Start with 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM. Size SSD storage for your indexes, data and backups.
Access
PostgreSQL starts at localhost:5432. Use SSH forwarding. Public database access and TLS require separate configuration; no web dashboard is installed.
Costs
PostgreSQL and pgvector use the PostgreSQL license. VPS and optional embedding-provider costs are separate.

Set up your application

  1. Choose pgvector, Latest, Ubuntu 24.04 and at least 2 vCPU with 4 GB RAM.
  2. Wait for first-boot installation. Connect by SSH and read the server access guide.
  3. Forward port 5432 over SSH. Connect a PostgreSQL client as vectorapp with the private password from the access guide.
  4. Supply embeddings, create vector columns and test indexes. Back up the database; configure TLS before any public database access.

Questions about this VPS

  • First installation selects the current official release channel. A restart keeps the installed version. Back up data and review upstream changes before a manual upgrade.
  • It stores and searches embeddings supplied by your application. Database queries run on CPU. No model or paid API is configured by default.
  • The cluster, roles, rows and indexes remain. The recorded PostgreSQL 18 image stays fixed. Back up before planned database-major or extension upgrades.
